You outlived me!!! I deserved to see you die. Not fair!!!!

Matty wrote
Nah. The first one now shall later be last. Hopefully Buckley is feeling the pain of those whom he would have capitalism exploit.

Andrew wrote
I like how it says "kill your idols" but it's a picture of Bob Dylan on your t-shirt.

lauren wrote
its from dylan's music video "Subterranean homesick blues"

Someone else wrote
Yeah, that never happened on the "Subterranean Homesick Blues" music video. Never a sign that said "Kill Your Idols." Nice shirt anyway.

Joan Baez wrote
It is supposed to be a commentary on the depth to which Bob Dylan is idolized.

Dylan Fan wrote
Great irony in the use of Dylan.

maggie's farm wrote
i can't help it, i know he doesn't like the icon stuff, but he's just stinkin awesome. i still want the shirt. i did consider the irony tho.

Another Dylan Fan wrote
i think the shirt makes fun of the person wearing. i agree, excellent irony...

Michelle wrote
Yeah..when I saw the Idols thing I thought of Francis Bacon, who Dylan may have been referencing...it may not make sense to people if they don't know Bacon! Is it actually in his video?? :( lol

ben wrote
it's an allen ginsberg quote, "kill your idols, before they kill you." idolizing can lead to a death to one's individuality and true self.

Bob Dylans Cat wrote
i'd sooner wear it if it said 'Hug your idols'

mouse wrote
In the Pennebaker documentary Don't Look Back, Dylan holds up these placards and flips through them with--which song?--playing in the background, some of the cards are words from the lyric, other are more tangentially related. No memory of whether he holds up this specific card . . .

asclibra wrote
Am I missing something here????? Can`t help thinking about John Lennon: did someone incite M.C. to "KILL YOUR IDOL" ? There are a lot of idiots out there who would be willing to do that literally if they thought that is what Dylan seems to mean...........

sally o'malley wrote
:) it reminds me of \"sugar baby\"... everything-- the shirt, people who say Dylan sold out, these comments, all of us who get such pleasure trying to figure the man out...

who is bob dylan?

biscuit wrote
just this random guy. changed his name, moved to new york city, wrote a couple songs about wind and time and tambourines and some guy named bill zantzinger, plugged in his guitar, pissed off some folk music people, got married, released a double album, something about some girl named johanna, got in a motorcycle accident, played music in a basement somewhere, opted out of woodstock, got divorced, ended up in some movie about billy the kid, wore face paint, painted some pictures that aren't any good, sang about a boxer, continued releasing albums, won a couple grammys, and is currently touring forever.

\"Dont follow leaders\" Would have been better, indeed accurate, I dont know what bright spark came up with this but it sucks. I cant see Lord Bob holding a sign like that seeing as though; a) Hes got enough nutty fans already that may actually wanna kill him, and b) Look at John Lennon, someone Dylan was very close with.

Shitty tee, shitty graphic of dylan and tottally misplaced and not thought out, scrap it - Its a dead man walking !

anybody know where to get the one Axl Rose wore at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert? The one with Jesus on it.

Dylan Expert wrote
Mouse, the video you are talking about is for Dylan's song "Subterranean Homesick Blues". And the placard on this T-shirt is not one of those he held up in the video

John wrote
Can someone please tell me what ginsberg piece this is taken from? I've googled and googled but I can't find anything.

dgbainsky wrote
I'd say the quote -- or at least the message -- is better attributed to Nietzsche than to either Ginsberg or Dylan...Just google 'Nietzsche, Twilight of The Idols'...

avril price wrote
This is also very reminiscent of the Doors.....It also puts me in mind of being young, classless & free & latenight/early morning rhetoric about the death of an ego & why we need idols anyway..........

Dumbledore55 wrote
Leaving aside the fact that BD is one of my idols (if I can be said to have "idols"; scriptural sanctions against idolatry spring to mind), as is Lennon - I really can't see Dylan advocating killing anyone. Question or eschew idols maybe, as in "don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters". But not killing or any other form of violence. Not a bad, if simple, cartoon of Dylan, I just wish the sign said something else. I neither know nor particularly care about Ginsberg.

griff99 wrote
It is from the ginsberg piece "Howl"

Chris Cyr wrote
Yes, perhaps it would have been better if Allen Ginsberg was holding up the placard, if it is quoting one of his poems. As mentioned by some people who have commented before me,...i see this design and can't help but think about John Lennon.

no one reads "howl" all the way thru... its one of those things you're supposed to do but no one does, like watch citizen kane.
i dont see how ginsberg got so famous, reading his work is like trekking across the mojave desert in search of water.
i like the shirt, altho the graphic of dylan is a bit annoying. you all are taking it too literally, it isnt in favor of violence, just individual thought.
still doesnt beat my fave tho, "Stop Bitching Start a revolution."

Ramona wrote
biscuit love your synopsis! concise version of im not there. oh oh, guess i cant kill my idol.

Dumbledore55 wrote
Maybe you and I can see it isn't really in favour of violence, boo, but it can too easily be interpreted that way. And there's enough violence already, and nuts like Chapman who might literally try to kill their idols. We really don't need that. Even before Lennon's murder Mick Jagger has always feared that someone might try to assassinate him. I stand by my original point. I too, Chris, thought of Lennon when I first saw this shirt (but I can't imagine a Ginsberg shirt being a hot seller). I doubt very much whether Dylan himself would endorse the shirt or the sentiment, though I'm sure he'd dig the ironic spirit in which it was created.

How bout this:

Love your idols,
Hate your idols,
Be your idols,
Be better than your idols,
Incorporate your idols,
Integrate your idols,
Divorce your idols,

And don\'t look back.

From my good or bad memory...

It ain\'t no use to wonder why babe,
If\'n you don\'t know by now,
And it aint no use to wonder why babe,
It don\'t matter anyhow,
When the rooster crows at the break of dawn,
Look out your window and I\'ll be gone,
You\'re the reason I\'ll be travelin\' on,
But don\'t think twice, it\'s alright.

Okay, I don't know a lot about Bob Dylan, but I thought it was a Sonic Youth quote. As in the Sonic Youth song. Kill Yr Idols. You know? "Kill your idols, sonic death, it's the end of the world, and confusion is sex". About Christgau? Eh.

I must admit, "Don't follow leaders" would be better. There are limits to how ironic I want my t-shirts to be.

HAGRID55 wrote
This shirt would have been SO much better if it said "Don't Follow Leaders" and/or "Watch the Parking Meters". Same spirit but without the kill/violence aspect that causes people problems, plus it would be an actual quote from Dylan. I would have bought one then. (I'm buying your other Dylan shirt plus a few others, so I am a real customer)

david bain wrote
Yeah, I like the \\\'Don\\\'t follow leaders\\\' one myself...

How about this...

Don\\\'t follow leaders...
They will lead you over cliffs...

HmmmmmmMan wrote
See, I like this shirt because I see it as a challenge. Dylan constantly promoted doing your own thing, and I guess that by wearing this shirt you are paying him homage, by listing him as target number 1. You want to take down the top, by being better.

It's not kill your idols literally, to me anyway. It means "not to follow leaders," very much in the same way Dylan emphasized in Subterranean Homesick Blues--which is why I'm guessing Dylan is holding a card up with the saying on it (plus he and Ginsberg hung out, AND Ginsberg was in the background in the video for the song).
I LOVE Dylan, but the shirt is kind of ironic. Don't follow leaders-don't idolize others-but wear their face on your shirt so you can walk 'round feeling cool cause you've got Dylan plastered on your chest with a philosophical saying you probably don't fully understand anyway?

someone else said what i wanted to say, and i agree, i think he\'s talking nietzsche and blasting one of the ten commandments, the \'no false idols or engraven images\'. some say that one commandment did lots to contain human excellence and hence stunted humanity
