Personally, my favorite book was Kingdom of Fear. He talks about such crazy stuff in that book, i would give anything to just have been riding shotgun with him when the mountain lion jumped in his car, or biking with him on his Ducati 900rr.

I'm reading The Rum Diary right now and i am continuously amazed at the coming-of-age insights that he can express in two or three sentences. He started Rum Diaries when he was 22, thats my age now and i am in awe that words can be put so well by a man my age.

There seems to be a lot of disent and disagreement about who Hunter was: Was he a drug crazed excuse to get high? -or- Was he a modern day profit, with insights as deep as anybody alive? Amazingly both.

But Hunter's political insights were not sofisticated. It was mostly anarchy and liimitless personal liberties, two very meritorius causes.

Hunter was very much like Bob Dylan, a kind of illusive disreguard for quality, in the gonzo style, that flowed unconsiousley, and only afterward could the complexity be admired, but during the creation, it is a formless raving rant.

Well he wasn\'t a homo he did have a family. Who gices a shit if he was, that was a smart quote above. Apparently the message of his famed Fear and Loating is misunderstood by this board. He didn\'t find the American Dream, he clearly states in the book his generation \"smoked it up\". He reason he uses drug references in the book so much is to make a point; that was the culture. Why don\'t you people who love him so much try reading his other books? Before you get on a message boards to dicuss him(i.e. what he wrote about) know your facts. Maybe he should not to be idolized in a counterculture way that he hated, but he was an amazing writer, an Author of (2) Top Literary Works of the 20th century.

One Hand Clapping:
\"I knew a Buddhist once, and Ive hated myself ever since. The whole thing was failure.
He was a priest of some kind, and he was also extremely rich. They called him a monk and he wore saffron roes and I hated him because of his arrogance. He thought he knew everything.
One day I was trying to rent a large downtown property from him, and he mocked me. \"You are dumb,\" he said. \"You are doomed if you stay in this business. The stupid are gobbled up quickly.\"
\"I understand.\" I said. \"I am stupid. I am doomed. But I think I know something you don\'t.\"
He laughed. \"Nonsense,\" he said. \"You are a fool. You know nothing.\"
I nodded respectfully and leaned closer to him, as if to whisper a secret. \"I know the answer to the greatest riddle of all,\" I said.
He chuckled. \"and what is that?\" he said. \"And you\'d better be Right, or I\'ll kill you.\"
\"I know the sound of one hand hand clapping,\" I said. \"I have finally discovered the answer.\"
Several other Buddhists in the room laughed out loud, at this point. I knew they wanted to humiliate me, and now they had me trapped-because there is no answer to that question. These Saffron bastards have been teasing us with it forever. They are amused at our failure to grasp it.
Ho ho, I went into a drastic crouch and hung my left hand low, behind my knee. \"Lean closer,\" I said to him. \"I want to answer your high unanswerable question.\"
As he leaned his bright bald head a little closer into my orbit, I suddenly leaped up and bashed him flat on the ear with the palm of my left hand. It was slightly cupped, so as to deliver maximum energy on impact. An isolated package of air is suddenly driven through the Eustachian tube and into the middle brain at quantum speed, causing pain, fear, and extreme insult to the tissue.
The Monk staggered sideways and screamed, grasping his head in agony. then he fell to the floor and cursed me. \"You swine!\" he croaked. \"Why did you hit me and burst my eardrum?\"
\"Because that,\" I said, \"is the sound of one hand clapping. that is the answer to your question. I have the answer now, and you are deaf.\"
\"Indeed,\" he said. \"I am deaf, but I am smarter. I am wise in a different way.\" He grinned vacantly and reached out to shake my hand.
\"You\'re welcome,\" I said. \"I am, after all, a doctor.\"

Paul - how is that pathetic? I am all for a difference of opinion when it doesn\'t constitute absolute idiocy you swine.

Over and out, Bubba, ho ho :D

Hunter was not about the drugs, or the hotels in Vegas... he was about a time and place, a state of being that evolved from the 60's. He was a man who went down another, uncharted road. He changed all people he touched... When his pen hit paper, or his record button was pressed, something magical was about to happen, and that magic lives on to this day. Any who think that Hunter S Thompson was about drugs and decadent luxury, just don't get it.

If so, well, we'll just have to cut his head off and bury him somewhere, 'cause it goes without saying that we can't turn him loose. no man could have consumed as many drugs as in fear and loathing. in an issue of rolling stone that came out when he was still alive, he even admitted that he couldnt have taken that many drugs and lived to talk about it. theres no denying that hst was a real son of a bitch, but he was a rare son of a bitch and an interesting one at that. i dont blame him for doing himself in. life was so much different when he was growing up compared to now. he would have been miserable getting older with todays society and politics. i dont advocate suicide -but he wanted to go out with a bang and its better that we remember him this way than to remember him as an old miserable man.

Every discussion group on the interweb seems to be contorting into some sick dadaesque parody of a detoxing hippy’s nightmare. Hideous shrieking beasts roam unchecked through public spaces, colliding violently with dumbstruck hair dressers and kindergardeners. Complete pandemonium. New users stupidly wandering into the path of innocent sounding chat rooms are sucked in like ATM cards, pulled over their own taste horizon, nearly spaghettified by the terrible forces. No chance at all for the poor bastards. But no matter. Theirs will at least be a quick death.

Where do these vile reptiles come from? I mean who’s got the *time* for it? Have we really sunk so low as a people that some rotten punk furiously pecks raging screeds night after night for *kicks*? Didn’t we used to get drunk and hump each other for fun? Didn’t we race enormous American cars through the night, knocking off some elderly farmer’s mailbox with a bat made in Kentucky? Didn’t we torment livestock? These were the fighting habits of the Rockwellian nerdowell in a bygone age, and even if it was all bullshit, ho ho, at least it had a little pizazz. I could watch a movie about it and at least feel like kicking my math teacher’s ass the next morning. The idea had teeth.

But the modern troublemaker can raise hell without disturbing the pizza boxes and unanswered mail piled by his front door. These mild ones can rebel against what ever you got from behind the bullet-proof veil of an LCD panel, ordering up hungry new herds of biters with nothing but a 4 letter stock symbol. No personal danger and all of the satisfying fun of smoking weed at school or shoplifting from Circuit City. A teenage slime wave.

So what do you do? You do what any meat-eating American does: You build a gated community. Safe and sound and tight as a drum, but usually lacking the raunchy biker bars or pool halls that make a neighborhood interesting. They tend to get awfully quiet at night, when decent people are watching reality TV as the good lord intended. Not that some damn peace and quiet isn’t a good thing from time to time, if only to let one hangover clear before getting a strong, clean start on the next.

Which reminds me…

I forgave him when he didn't show at all for another "evening with." Then I read his oral biography, and learned that, aside from "Campaign," all his other works were heavily edited and written by the assistants he seduced -- disciples, all -- and harried assistant editors from Rolling Stone. What a damn, crying shame. He'd stall up to a deadline, then send in his notes, and leave it to young hacks to piece his words together in a semblance of coherency. What a terrible, crying shame. I will always be a fan; "Vegas" will always be on my Favorites list -- but Christ, he wrote his rambling often incoherent sports columns, but otherwise it was other people who did the work for him. Plus, he was so addicted to alcohol that during major surgery the doctors had to keep pumping pure alcohol into him to keep him alive. Read the book: Gonzo. A sad, sobering (excuse the pun) slap-in-the-face to all of us die-hards who worshipped The Godfather. "Gonzo Lives"? No, he died with "Campaign." And that was a long, long time ago.

Hunter was, in reality, not quite the person you expect him to be. He was smart, witty, and the most fun person to run around Aspen with. Everywhere we'd go, it would be under the influence of some kind of amphetamine, hallucinogen (typically LSD), barbiturate, or whatever, and always with a glass of liquor in one hand and a cigarette burning in the other. Of course, times like those are the ones I cherish, despite my not-so-great memory of the time (it wasn't all that long ago).

He would wake up in the late afternoon, eat "breakfast", and then it was time for some mischief. Sometimes it was going into Aspen, and sometimes it was just trying to see if we could "cut down" a tree with a .44cal Smith&Wesson 6" Revolver and a .338 Lapua Magnum Accuracy International sniper rifle. With the crates of ammunition (they were run through ungodly fast), we could wreak havoc; some of the land looked like a warzone, especially when the fully-automatic weapons (like a Romanian AK74-SU in 5.45mm and a RRA AR-15 "M4" in 5.56 with its $2k in modifications) and explosives came out to play.... Yes, and these were no M80s. I am talking true, unadulturated, extremely dangerous sticks of TNT.
Once, under the influence of 5 hits of LSD, 50mgs d,-Amphetamine, 3grams 'Shrooms, 40mgs Oxycodone, and at least 10 beers... We decided to see if we could make a tree fly, because we had been talking about flying trees for at least 2 hours. Since none had taken the initiative on their own to uproot themselves and flap their leaves to the next county, we decided to take the initiative...
We planted 8 sticks of dynamite, total, equally spaced around the tree and dug-in down about 2 feet, then ran det-cord at equal lengths from all pieces back to where we were which was maybe 100ft away. We sat down on our lawn chairs, I picked up a beer and Hunter snatched my cigarette from my mouth and used the burning end to light the det-cord. It fizzled for 20-30 seconds, but it felt like eternity (I had time to wrestle my cig back from Hunter, who had already taken a couple puffs). We were both looking away when...
BOOOOM!!! The shock of the explosion knocked us backwards, beer spilled all over us, jumbled vibes from the acid, but my cigarette was in my mouth and we both looked at it and started laughing. I don't know why, but we laughed for 5, maybe 10 minutes. It was one of the "acid-laughs", but my God, the world was at peace. The tree, however, ended up about 20ft away from where it started. I can't say it "flew", but it certainly "blew up".

Anita came running out because of the noise, and Sheriff Braudis came in his cop car. They both saw us laying there, drenched in beer, tripping balls, and laughing like little kids. And the two of them just stood there, smiling.

And I remember when Anita got the call, that dreadful call... She was at the Aspen Rec Center, and after that fateful boom, I saw her in tears running to get to see what happened. She saw me and gave me the look... The kind you get when you know something bad has happened. She called me that night, and I cried. For days, I cried. I saw the suicide note in person, and I knew it was him.

He never seemed "in control", but the reality is that he always WAS in control of himself. Every little bit was just a conscious act of anti-conformity, conscious insanity. He was getting old, and he truly couldn't be "Hunter S. Thompson" anymore, and in the last years, we all could tell his depression was getting severe. He went out at a time that HE chose to be appropriate, and I would expect nothing less from him.

So to all of you who think that "worshiping" a "crazy, suicidal maniac" is disgusting, I say FUCK YOU, DROP SOME ACID, AND LEARN WHAT LIFE IS REEEALLLY ABOUT!!! ALTER YOUR PERCEPTIONS, IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO TRULY SEE WHAT'S GOING ON IN THIS MESS OF A WORLD!!

I'm a huge fan of the weird and strange. I was turned on to HST by a writing teacher I had in high school; after he had read a few of my things. He told me I needed to check out some Thompson and so I did. It positively added a new flair to my writing and outlook... I choose to embrace my own persona of gonzo journalism to the fullest extent of the term. I've gone out dressed like the good Dr. for Halloween, New Years, and many live music shows. I keenly throw myself into Johnny P my gonzo reporter (I'm told I look a lot like Bill Murray from Where the Buffalo Roam) and write reviews for bands. I've started a series I call 'True Grit' where I try to remind the good folks of my town that you should never forget your inner child. Just trying to do what I can to keep the dream alive. Long live the spirit of the doomed they broke the mold with him. I hate to advocate drugs or liquor, violence, insanity to anyone. But in my case it's worked.

Hey (A Friend...) Thank you so god damn much. So often I'm confronted with individuals who read a singel book, or just see the movie, and act as though Hunter were some kind of counter culture/anti-establishment angel, sent down to save them from the abyss of blandness. As someone who never new the man personally, I can say only this: He was a marvelous writer with one of the more accurate perspectives on life and all the odd occurences with it. Good ol' Dr.Thompson is right up there with Vonnegut in my book.( I know, it's not an impressive name drop, but my generation is incapable of literary references, and anyone with any degree of taste will agree that Kurt had unparalleled tecnique and made it look easy.) Anyway, I just wanted to say that you should thank your lucky stars you were fortunate enough to have a personal relationship with a man who, as far as I can tell, was one of the most interesting freethinkers of the past century. There are a rare few people like this within every generation, and maybe ginsburg was right, and the most brillaint ones lose it an end up on skid row, but not Hunter, the crafty guy parle'd it into a means of income. He will be missed and read for centuries to come. If he's up there (though I doubt anyone is "up there") I hope he knows that he could have spent his years catagorizing and naming new species of lizards in the tropics and It still would have been a fun read.

And remember what Frank said!
"Only the boring and bland shall survive
only the lamest of lamness will thrive
take it or leave it you won't be alive
if you are overtly creative

Wow...I never really knew to much about Hunter..til I experienced the movie: FALILV...once I connected with that flick, I knew then this guy was someone special. I so get a kick out of the story about Hunter/Johnny Depp and how Johnny grasped Hunter to really make the part work for him. Staying at Hunters pad...heard Johnny called it the dungeon, had Hunter shave his head too. Wow..what a trip that must have been up at the Woody Creek Ranch. I plan on takin' a trip this month up to Aspen, to eat/have a drink at the Woody Creek Tavern, where Hunter was always there..then hopefully, get a view of the sculpture that Depp had built to blast Hunter into the heavens...the GONZO emblem. Im so lookin' forward to The Rum Diary..another HST writing. RIP Hunter...you were somethin' else!

You hipster fairies are misled, I doubt there are any true fans here. I have read everything the man ever wrote. Many of your quotes were way off, your interpretations of the man and his work make me sick. He was more than FLLV.

Who gets the profit from these shirts? Not Anita, not his estate, just the capitalist swine cashing in on my culture, one that defies and comments on the gluttonous state of our rotten country through the decades. Kudos for validating every bit of commentary he has ever made. You pigs make me sick, have fun choking down those bon-bons and $40 steaks purchased with the blood of honest hard working Americans. How about 1 original idea?
